Digital product passport

Make product data ready for sharing, a public page, and upcoming ESPR requirements, based on what you already gather.

Context

A digital product passport is the public identity of the product: what it is, what it is made of, and which environmental and traceability data travel with it. Under ESPR, product passports gradually become a requirement for more product groups. You do not need to wait for the final deadline to start gathering the right things.

In LCAB the passport builds on product data, materials, suppliers, and LCA. You get a clarity score, publishing, a public page, QR, and a way for recipients to verify issued documents.

What matters for a small team is control: you share a visible slice, not the whole internal folder. The customer gets something they can open. You keep the rest internal until you are ready.

Context

Why it matters for a small product team

When a customer asks for product data, sending a folder is rarely enough. They want something they can open, understand, and trust. A prepared passport and public page make sharing controlled: you choose what is visible without sending the whole internal pile.

For SMEs, preparation is cheaper than panic. If you already have structure on materials and documents, the product passport is a natural next step, not a new project from scratch.

Public verification via document ID adds trust: the recipient can check the issued version instead of relying only on a PDF that may have changed along the way.

Preparation is cheaper than panic when the customer or the requirements hit.

In depth

What you find here

Each part has a clear purpose. Here is what it does, when it makes sense, and how teams typically use it.

01

Digital product passport

Gathers product identity, materials, environmental data, and traceability in a passport flow with clarity score, publishing, and a public page. It is preparation for a Digital Product Passport, built on data you are already working with.

Use it when preparing for a Digital Product Passport under ESPR, or when you want to show product data in a more structured way.

How to use it

  1. Open Product passport and create a passport for the relevant product.
  2. Fill or reuse data from materials, suppliers, and LCA.
  3. Publish when the clarity score is acceptable, and share the public page or QR.

02

Traceability

Shows how product, materials, suppliers, documents, and LCA connect. It is the overview you use when someone asks about the value chain, or when a new colleague needs to get up to speed.

Use it when onboarding new colleagues, or when you need to explain the value chain to a customer.

How to use it

  1. Open Traceability for the product.
  2. Follow the relations from product out to materials and suppliers.
  3. Use the overview to check whether the documentation actually covers what you think.

03

Public pages and QR

Public product page and QR code as the visible part of the passport for customers and authorities. You share a controlled slice, not the whole internal documentation.

Use it when you want to share a controlled slice of product data without sending the whole internal folder.

How to use it

  1. Publish the product passport first.
  2. Open the public page and check what is visible.
  3. Share the link or QR with the customer.

04

Public verification

Recipients can look up a document ID and see the issued version. That builds trust because you are not only sending a PDF that could have been changed along the way.

Use it when a customer, investor, or partner needs to check that the document is genuine.

How to use it

  1. Issue the report from LCAB so it gets a document ID.
  2. Send the ID together with the document.
  3. Ask the recipient to use Verify document in the menu.

Outcome

What you get

  • Passport flow

Product identity, materials, environmental data, and traceability in a flow that reuses what you already gather.

  • Clarity score

See how close you are to publishing, and what is still missing before you share a link or QR.

  • Public page and QR

A controlled slice for customers and authorities, without sending the whole internal documentation.

  • Traceability and verification

Overview of how product, materials, suppliers, and documents connect, plus public checks of document ID.

Control

What you do not need to be an expert in

You do not need to know the full ESPR text or every upcoming delegated act. You need to point to the product, the data you have, and what is still missing.

LCAB helps you structure the visible layer. Legal advice on when your exact product group is covered is still something you take with an advisor when needed.

Start

Typical start in LCAB

  1. Gather core data

Materials, suppliers, and the most important documents on the product.

  2. Create passport

Open Product passport and start for the relevant product.

  3. Follow the score

Fill or reuse data, and use the clarity score to see what is missing.

  4. Publish and share

Publish when the score is acceptable, check the public page, and share the link or QR.

Answers

Short answers

01

Is a product passport already mandatory for all products?

No. It is rolled out over time under ESPR for selected product groups. Preparing now makes you ready when requirements hit your category, and when customers already ask.

02

Does LCA need to be finished before we make a passport?

Not necessarily. The passport can start with identity, materials, and traceability. Environmental data gets stronger once LCA or carbon footprint is in place.

03

What does the customer see on the public page?

A controlled slice of product data, not your whole internal folder. You publish first, check visibility, then share the link or QR.
