Digital product passport: what it is, and how you prepare
A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured overview of a product: materials, origin, climate impact, and what can be repaired or recycled.
Why the EU talks about product passports
ESPR (EU 2024/1781) is the ecodesign rule set meant to make products more transparent. DPP is the digital form: a customer or authority scans and sees the documentation.
Not every product is covered on the same day. Requirements arrive in groups. What reaches you first is often a customer already asking.
What you need to be able to document
Think of the passport as a passport for the goods. Without master data, materials and traceability, the QR code is empty.
- What the product is, and which materials it contains
- Where components come from, and who the supplier is
- Climate impact and other documentation you can already stand behind
- Repair, durability and recycling, when you know it

Common questions
Is DPP the same as an LCA?
No. An LCA describes impact across the life cycle. A product passport is the documentation that follows the product: materials, traceability and often climate data. LCA results can feed the passport.
Does every product need a passport now?
No. ESPR introduces the passport in stages. Start with the products customers already ask about, so you are not rebuilding everything when the rule lands.
Can we prepare without the final template?
Yes. The data a passport needs are the same data you need anyway: product, materials, suppliers and documentation.
